Healthwatch Southend is inviting Deaf people who use British Sign Language (BSL) to take part in a focus group about their experiences of using general practice (GP services).

We want to hear directly from Deaf people about what works well, what does not, and what needs to improve when accessing GP services.

Why are we doing this?

In 2023, Healthwatch Southend held focus groups with Deaf people and found significant inequalities in access to GP services. These included:

  • Lack of BSL interpreters

  • Poor communication support

  • Information not being provided in accessible formats

These barriers can make it difficult and sometimes impossible for Deaf people to get the healthcare they need.

By running this new focus group, we aim to gather real, lived experiences so we can produce a report with clear recommendations for the local health board and commissioners of services.

These organisations plan and pay for healthcare services, so it is vital that services are shaped by the people who use them.

What is the focus group?

The focus group is a chance for Deaf people to:

  • Share their experiences of GP appointments

  • Talk about communication barriers and access issues

  • Highlight good practice as well as areas needing improvement

  • Help influence future GP services in Southend

Your experiences, good or bad, can help create meaningful change.

We are committed to making this focus group fully accessible. The session will be supported by:

  • A qualified BSL interpreter

  • BSL-qualified assistants

  • A Deaf-friendly, inclusive environment

This is a safe space where your views will be respected and valued.

How to get involved

If you are a deaf person who uses BSL to communicate, book your free place by emailing us at info@healthwatchsouthend.co.uk or text 07393 147665

By sharing your experiences, you can help improve GP services for Deaf people now and in the future.
