Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust: CQC assessment

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a new assessment of Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, following a visit in March 2026.


The Trust provides mental health, community health and learning disability services across Essex, including Southend.


The assessment looked at how well the Trust is led and managed, including how it keeps people safe, listens to patients and staff, works with partners and improves its services.


The Care Quality Commission rated the Trust's leadership as ‘requires improvement’.


The assessment identified areas where further improvements are needed, including leadership, governance, risk management and safety. It also recognised areas where progress had been made and where people had shared positive experiences.


What does the Trust say?

The Trust has welcomed the assessment and says it has made improvements, while recognising that there is still more work to do.


It says it has made or is working on a number of changes, including:

  • Redesigning care on wards with patients.

  • Investing in mental health urgent care centres.

  • Reviewing community mental health services.

  • Developing a new electronic patient record system.

  • Working more closely with patients, families and carers to make sure their views are heard.
