Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, also known as Leukemia or CLL, is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Yearly in the UK, 3,800 to 4,700 people, by population size, around 10–15 people in Southend may be affected annually.
Signs and symptoms
It usually develops slowly and is more common in people over the age of 40. There is currently no cure, but treatment can help manage the condition, extend life, and support a better quality of life.
Symptoms can be subtle and may go unnoticed. They can include:
Swollen glands
Unintentional weight loss
Frequent infections or feeling unwell often
Feeling very tired, even after sleep
A pin-prick rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
Bleeding or bruising without injury
A high temperature & looking paler than usual
Early detection
Early diagnosis can improve the chances of effective treatment. Speak to your GP if you are concerned about any of these symptoms. They will ask questions about how you are feeling, examine you, and may arrange tests.
They can either rule this out as a possible cause or refer you to a specialist for further investigation. An urgent referral currently has an average wait time of around two weeks.
Don’t go through this alone
Thinking you may be seriously unwell can cause stress and anxiety. It is important to have support throughout this time. You may wish to speak to a trusted friend or family member and ask them to accompany you to appointments if you feel worried about attending alone.
There are also support services available. Please see the resources at the end of this page for more information.
