Explaining the changes in the NHS

30/07/2013

The NHS is currently undergoing some of the biggest changes in its 65 year history. The result of this upheaval is that a baffling array of different organisations are now involved in commissioning, providing and monitoring healthcare in the UK.

To help explain how this modernised healthcare system functions, the Department of Health has produced an interactive diagram

Clicking on the names of the organisations on the wheel will bring up more details about what they do. The services that members of the public are most likely to access directly can be found at the centre of the diagram.

For a slightly less sombre perspective on the same information, why not a take look at a video created by The King's Fund. This uses a giant piece of artwork to shed some light on the structure of the updated healthcare system, and explains why some of these changes have occurred.

Double clicking on the video will make it full-screen. To return to the previous page, double click on the screen again. To watch the video with subtitles click the captions button (the one that looks like a tiny addressed envelope) on the menu bar that appears at the bottom of the video. If the menu bar is not visible move your cursor over the film to make it appear.

A PDF image of the completed painting can be found here.
